Welcome to the official page of the project Montreal Completely Wireless from Radioactif.com and Nomade Telecom. This project, currently in development, will complete its commercial launching in September 2007 in the neighborhood with the largest population density in Montreal, the Plateau Mont Royal. In the 2 years which will follow this launching, 87% of the population of the island will be able to profit from the Internet and wireless VoIP.
Montreal goes wireless by September 2008 – Press release June 14th 2007
WHO ARE WE
Our company is a co-ownership made of Radioactif.com and Nomade Telecom.
RADIOACTIF.COM
Radioactif.com is one of the most important independent ISP for DSL and cable in Montreal. It has an infrastructure to manage subscriptions, access points and customer service.
Radioactif’s goal is to be the alternative to the large Internet and phone providers by offering quality services without contract at the best possible price. Thanks to an anti-monopoly law from the CRTC, it allows Radioactif to use the network of companies such as Bell and Vidéotron and to resell it within the population. Radioactif is also a independent portal, comparable to Canoe or Sympatico, which publishes hundred news per day and attracts hundreds of thousands of single visitors per month.
NOMADE TELECOM
Founded in 2005, Nomade Telecom Inc is a company that does consultation, design, installation and operation of underground wireless networks. The company’s mission is to help cities, governments and large companies to integrate wireless networking services enabling them to face the challenges of the XXI century and to save considerable sums in telecommunication expenses. Currently, Nomad Telecom’s activies are mainly concentrated in Europe with customers such as Vodaphone in England and Telia in Denmark.
REASON BEHIND THIS UNION
The complementarities of the two companies will guarantee a frank success in the starting and the exploitation of wireless networks in metropolitan areas.
For Nomad, Radioactif.com is a recognized mark. Its management structure offers the company the ability to provide consumers with Internet and voice services (well-established, order desk, technical support and customer service).
For Radioactif, Nomade has the technical expertise and the experiment to implement and manage a wireless network of high standard in reliability and safety able to support mobile VoIP and other advanced services. Thus, the technological choices will be poised and the network management will be of a high level in reliability.
Linked in a new entity called Radioactif-Nomade, the initial activities will be as follows:
• Design and deployment of wireless networks covering major urban areas;
• Installation of the necessary exploitation platforms to insure a good start and the marketing of the services
• Implementation and maintenance of the network
• Sub-renting the network to public and private authorities for the deployment of avant-garde technological solutions.
OUR MISSION
Radioactif Nomade will become the Canadian leader mobile VoIP, wireless Internet and value added services in major urban areas.
What pushed us to develop a wireless network
Oligopolies such as Bell, Telus, Rogers, Vidéotron and Cogeco have been imposing their terms to consumers for decades.
New opened frequencies and open technologies make it possible to new players to be competing on the telecoms market and Radioactif wants to seize this opportunity to offer important savings to consumers.
MARKET AND COMPETITION
Wireless networks have become more and more accessible in the United States, Europe, and Asia for several years now. Canada slowly follows the step and Montreal, which wasn’t yet presented with any great wireless initiative beside Île Sans Fil, a non-profit organization who do not share the same objectives as us. However, all the ingredients are in place so that a deployment on a large scale becomes a success:
• The density of population in Canadian city-areas is sufficiently high to ensure each one of our deployments a positive net benefit positive in only the second year of the project, and this even by basing our numbers on a conservative penetration market.
• Key players who wish to develop a network on a large scale must put up themselves within the legislated radio frequencies which are expensive, and thus is reflected on the price of their services.
• The number of Wi-Fi devices installed in our electronic hardware will reach the record-breaking number of 1 billion in 2012. In other words, our solution is and will remain accessible for more and more users to come.
• All customers WiMAX certified devices, the technology which perhaps will become the standard in the future, must also be certified Wi-Fi.
OUR TECHNOLOGICAL CHOICE
We will attack the market with transmission frequencies not regulated in Wi-Fi, minimizing blows on our deployment expenses while eliminating the expenses of frequency licenses. A model tested abroad and having a broad community endorsing it and making it progress, it has the advantage of using Wi-Fi devices, the most popular wireless technology. The background infrastructure uses Wimax technology.

Radioactif Nomade’s management team has a whole business competence, covering entirely the business plan exposed, from the forces and weaknesses of existing technologies and the logistic knowledge of deployment to the administration skills of running an Internet providing company.

THE PROJECT IN NUMBERS
On a timetable of 24 months, 300 km² or 60% of Montreal’s island surface will be covered by our Wi-Fi wireless network, thus serving more than 87% of the population on the island. According to a penetration rate of 7% over two years, we anticipate a positive net benefit as of the second year of business. More than 25 million will be invested in infrastructure and an important marketing budget will allow us to inform the population on the advantages of our services.
Our minimal density threshold of households per km² is approximately 1000, which explains why the deployment does not cover the entirety of the island. We anticipate that the number of subscribers to our services of mobile VoIP and Wi-Fi wireless Internet access will reach 50 000 during the third year of business.
